Come pound the streets of Alexandra, urges Nkosi

Co-founder and director of the juniors at Run Alex Athletics Club Siphiwe Nkosi urges Alex residents to embrace the Adreach Alex 10K race on March 21.

With only five days to go before the close of the online registrations of the Adreach Alex 10K
on March 10 and 15 days before the actual race, organisers are calling on all running fanatics
and others interested to ensure they register themselves before the online deadline expires.
One of the race organisers Siphiwe Nkosi has called on the community of Alexandra and
other communities outside to open their hearts and warm up to the race and participate in
numbers as participation so far is at 1 000 entries which has just reached the 50% mark of 2
000 entries they hope to register for the second edition of the race this year.
The first edition of the race had a target of 1 200 entries and organisers stopped taking any
further entries when they reached 1 400. Nkosi said so far registrations indicate more visitors
than Alex residents.
“As much as we are excited by the outside response, we would like to urge the local
community to embrace the race as it is theirs too in as much as Soweto people have their
Soweto Marathon. I urge them not to wait for the last minute but to join us as well at our race
promo event every Saturdays at Alexandra Plaza and register.
“We are found there between 10:00 and 14:00 and this gives us the opportunity to also
interact with community members and build relationships and the understanding of one
another as the community of this iconic and historical township,” Nkosi said.
The costs to enter the race are R150 for the 10K race and R100 for the 5K. Nkosi said they
will continue to accept manual entries at Alexandra Plaza up until close to the race day,
which is themed around exploring what Alex has to offer and its iconic sites such as the
Mandela House, the Alexandra Heritage Centre, the site of the killing of student activist
Vincent Tshabalala on London Road and 13 th Avenue and many other heritage sites around
the township, including that of the founding father of Mozambique, the late Samora Machel.
Nkosi said the race was not just an event but a way of placing Alexandra on the map,
especially the tourist map and with the community embracing it, Nkosi said they can never go wrong but the race will get bigger with time.
