Former National Soccer League chairperson, Hindu leader and an accomplished lawyer and human rights activist Ashwin Trikamjee died on March 20 at the age of 80.
Trikamjee, who buried in Durban on Human Rights Day, was described by friends and family as a distinguished lawyer and a selfless person who had a deep passion for human rights, is said to have died of cancer at a Johannesburg hospital. As chairperson of the South African soccer federation, Trikamjee said a pivotal role in the amalgamation of various football federations and leagues in South Africa during the apartheid era and was also part of the delegation that attended the unity talks in Lusaka, Zambia. A Premier Soccer League statement in honour of Trikamjee described him as an astute, dedicated, and quintessential football administrator who served the sport with distinctions and will always be remembered for those attributes. Saying it was deeply saddened by the passing of the stalwart, the league said it shares the loss suffered by the family and extended heartfelt condolences to them for a life well lived, and a dependable servant of the country. In honour of his memory and service to the football fraternity, the league said a moment of silence was observed at all DStv Diski Challenge fixtures this weekend and expressed hope that his soul may repose peacefully.
