After a string of poor results, coach Gavin Hunt and SuperSport United have amicably agreed to part ways with immediate effect. United CEO Stanley Matthews said a club statement the 60-year-old coach, whose second stint with club which lasted two-and-a-half seasons, with the team finishing third in the 2022/23 season and seventh in the 2023/24 season in the premiership league competition. Currently, Matsatsantsa, as the Tshwane outfit is well-known to its supporters, lies in 15th position of a 16 team Betway Premiership League with 21 points from 21 games, after winning five games, drawing six and losing 10. Matsatsantsa finds itself in its most precarious ever position in the history of the Premier Soccer League (PSL), hoovering on the relegation zone and not sure whether it will survive the dreaded chop off zone for lower league, the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Hunt found himself in a bad hunting season this time around as he has achieved a special milestone in February this year – reaching 1 000 PSL games as head coach of various sides which is a first in South African football and its unlikely to be easily matched or surpassed. Matthews, along with his board and management of Matsatsantsa, have expressed appreciation for the work Hunt has done for club as head coach over many years. “We remain convinced that Gavin still has much to South African and African football given his extensive knowledge, expertise and experience and will always remain grateful for the impact he has had on the club and South African football in general and wish him well in his future endeavours,” Matthews said. Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and assistant to Hunt, Andre Arendse, will guide the team in the remainder of the league matches as interim head coach, with goalkeeper coach Grant
Johnson as his assistant.
