Hot on the heels of its exceptional exploits in the Nedbank Cup, Kaizer Chiefs has also managed to sneak in and snatch an award in the Betway Premiership Monthly Awards for the month of April.
The players from AmaKhosi, Democratic Republic of Congo international striker Glody Lilepo, won Goal of the Month while Sekhukhune United star Keletso Makgalwa snaped the Player of the Month Award and his coach, Eric Tinkler was crowned Coach of the Month.
A Premier Soccer League statement said the league-accredited football journalists and broadcasters from across South Africa acknowledged the trio’s exceptional performances throughout April. The judging panel conducted the process of choosing the winners under the watchful eye of the league and its sponsor Betway.
It said midfielder Makgalwa earned the Player of the Month accolade following a series of standout performances in April. Makgalwa was featured in three out of the four matches played and contributed significantly to the team’s attacking prowess, including scoring a crucial goal and providing an assist.
His dynamic play and creativity were instrumental in Sekhukhune’s unbeaten run during the month in questions. He edged out strong contenders from teammate and
goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, who kept two cleans sheets, and Stellenbosch FC midfielder Sanele Barns, who also put up an impressive performance in April.
Makgalwa was recognised alongside his coach, Tinkler, who was voted Coach of the Month and under his guidance, Sekhukhune concluded the month of April unbeaten, recording three wins and a draw.
Tinkler orchestrated notable victories over his former club Cape Town City (2-1), Polokwane City (2-0), and Orlando Pirates (1-0), as well as a hard-fought 1-1 stalemate against TS Galaxy. These results propelled Ba Bina Noko into the top three bracket of the premiership.
The Phefen Boys forward Lilepo, as Chiefs are known from the township of its breakaway from the Buccaneers founder Kaizer Motaung, claimed the Goal of the Month award for his spectacular solo effort at home against Marumo Gallants on April 26.
The DRC international’s impressive dribbling past three opposition defenders before unleashing a powerful shot into the top corner edged out strong competition from
Kamogelo Sebelebele’s impressive strike for TS Galaxy against Magesi FC, as well as Thulani Gumede’s curler from the edge of the box against the Cape Citizens [Cape Town City].
