As South Africa’s elite Betway Premiership season for 2024/25 draws to a close, the Premier Soccer League has announced that it will be holding back on the traditional date of holding of the league awards.
The awards are traditionally held in June soon after the close of the season but due to the busy off-season activities of one of its major clubs, the league decided to hold back on the awards until such time that the affected club, Mamelodi Sundowns, has completed its off-season football engagements that include participation in the Caf Champions League which begins on May 24, with the second leg coming up shortly
thereafter for the crowning of the champions.
The other engagement for Sundowns will be participation in the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup in the United States of America in June. “It’s for this reason that we have seen it fit to postpone the awards to another date still yet to be announced.
“The league, its member clubs, and all stakeholders in professional football across the country are united in their support for Mamelodi Sundowns as it flies the flag for South African football at these prestigious events,” a statement from the league said.
The statement added that the league would communicate the new date for the awards ceremony in due course.
