The adage of every dog has its day seems to ring true for the once mighty and all conquering Kaizer Chiefs, and this season, from face value, appears to be theirs to lose.
After almost a decade in the doldrums, the Phefeni Glamour Boys seem to have bounced back up and slowly but surely getting their shine and glamour back. AmaKhosi Amahle currently top the Betway Premiership log table on equal 13 points with Sekhukhune United after they both won four of their five opening games and drawing one apiece.
Sekhukhune occupies the number one spot on goal difference after banging eight goals in total and only conceding one, while Chiefs poached five without conceding. Their third-placed rival is South African and African continental football powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns with 11 points from five games, winning three, drawing two and
scoring 6 goals and conceding one.
The Phefeni Glamour Boys are set to collide with Babina Noko, the nickname for Sekhukhune United which means the ‘dance of the porcupine’. Sekhukhune delved deep into the market during the off season and strengthened all departments of the side in the hope of winning the Betway Premiership championship title.
Though still too early for speculation, indications are that the Limpopo outfit is surely doing the quill piercing dance of the porcupine on fellow teams in the 16-team league outfit of the Betway Premiership. As things stand now in the league leadership log,
the league so far seems to be a three-way race for the honours.
Another early title contender is Orlando Pirates, which has already lost two matches out of its five opening games. The Buccaneers too picked a couple of players in the
market during the off-season, and the bones of the Spooks seem to be jellying well with each other now with three wins on the trot. It would be interesting to see how the game between Chiefs and Sekhukhune pens out at the home of AmaKhosi, FNB
Stadium, on September 16.
AmaKhosi also refreshed its lineup in a few departments where weakness was glaring and its current log standing confirms the quality of the new arrivals, as the Phefeni Glamour Boys managed to hold the rampant ‘Yellow Machine’ of Sundowns to a goalless draw in the early season clash.
The season is still tenderly young for predictions, but it is safe to say the wheat is slowly but surely being sorted from the chaff. Who’s going to be wheat or chaff between Chiefs and Sekhukhune or coach Nasreddine Nabi and his Sekhukhune counterpart Eric Tinkler, only the ninety minutes of the next Wednesday game will tell.
