The South African government has vowed to leave no stone unturned in their search for the real circumstances that led to the death of South Africa’s Ambassador to France Nathi Mthethwa (58) on September 30.

This was disclosed by the SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, who said National Commissioner of police Lt. General Fannie Masemola, after consultation with relevant authorities, had decided to dispatch a seasoned team of five detectives to France to work alongside French police in their investigations around Mthethwa’s death.

One of those consulted is the newly appointed Minister of Police Professor Firoz Cachalia, who took from Minister Senzo Mchunu after he [Mchunu] was placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa after news of Mchunu’s interference and collusion with criminals to sabotage police work in the fight against rampant crime in the country, including his act of jumping into the work of the police under a unit called the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) and eventually ordering its disbandment.

Mchunu’s alleged interence and disbandment of the PKTT is said to have been instigated by a confidant of the Minister, known as Brown Mogotsi, who said to have political ambitions and works closely with tenderpreneurs and murder accused persons, Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe, both of whom are currently behind bars waiting trial for various murder cases of numerous musicians, an actress and businessmen.

Brigadier Mathe said the five team of detectives will be led by Major General Albert Maqhashalala, who is the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in the Western Cape province. The team has since left South Africa for France.

Brigadier Mathe said the deployed team will work closely with French law enforcement authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Ambassador Mthethwa’s death are ‘meticulously and thoroughly’ investigated to the satisfaction of all and sundry in South Africa.

“The deployment of these investigators reflects our commitment to ensuring that every effort is made to establish the full facts surrounding this tragedy. We will offer all necessary support to our counterparts in France and remain in close contact with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation throughout the process,” Professor Cachalia said.

“We are devastated by the sudden and untimely death of Ambassador Mthethwa,” Professor Chachalia said, describing Mthethwa as having ‘served the nation with distinction in various capacities and our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family during this difficult time’.

A time frame for the investigation has not been set but it hoped will be thorough and as quick as possible so as to provide answers and potential closure on Mthethwa’s death to his family, friends and close associates, including the South African nation at large.
