Kaizer Chiefs and coach Nasreddine Nabi have reached a mutual agreement to part ways after the Tunisian tactician led AmaKhosi to its first trophy after more than a decade of trophy drought at Naturena.

Nabi guided the Phefeni Glamour Boys to victory in the Nedbank Cup after dispatching of its fellow Soweto archrival Orlando Pirates at the cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in December at the end of the previous season earlier in the year.

A frenzy of celebrations by Chiefs officials and their distinguished guests and friends erupted at the VIP stands when the final whistle was blown, signaling a Chiefs win of the Nedbank Cup and Nabi was hailed as the hero who had ended the 10-year trophy drought at the club.

Nabi also started the 2025/26 season of the Betway Premiership on a high note, having played eight matches so far and winning four, drawing three and only losing one, which is a far cry from the previous decade-long of seasons.

But that hero status was short-lived after what the officials described as the coach’s failure to renew his Caf Coaching Licence that would allow him to coach the team in the Caf Confederation Cup, which Chiefs is playing in by virtue of winning the Nedbank Cup.

Under Nabi’s guidance in the new season, AmaKhosi has already played one round of the preliminaries with two more games to go, winning its first game 5-4 on penalties against an Angolan side Kabuscorp, after the tie ended 1-1 on aggregate as  both encounters in Angola and South Africa had the same scoreline and Nabi was not on the bench for both matches.

A statement from Kaizer Chiefs and head coach Nabi said both parties hereby confirm that, following constructive engagements, they have mutually agreed to conclude their professional relationship on an amicable basis.

The statement said parties recognise the importance of this decision being communicated in respectful and positive terms, reflecting the mutual regard maintained throughout their employment relationship. “Chiefs acknowledges and thanks Nabi for his contribution during his tenure with the club and extends best wishes for his continued success in future endeavours.

“Coach Nabi, in turn, conveys his appreciation to Kaizer Chiefs, its leadership, players and supporters for their commitment and support during his time at the Club during his stay as head coach,” the statement said.

Nabi’s destination is not clear for now but struggling sides in both South Africa and Africa in general could easily snap him up and Chiefs could one day come face-to-face with him.

Meanwhile, Chiefs has announced the promotion of Nabi’s assistants, Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, who were both part of Nabi’s original staff, to lead the technical team for the rest of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.
