Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu will appear for the first time before the Justice Madlanga Commission of Inquiry probing allegations of the capture of himself and other senior police officials by a cartel of criminal gangs.
Mchunu is expected to take the witness stand to tell his side of the story at 14H00 today at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria where the commission is sitting for hearings on the matter.
Among the issues, Mchunu stands accused of the arbitrary disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) without consulting the KwaZulu-Natal provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as the custodian of the PKTT.
It is believed Mchunu will seek to re-can the worms of the pandora box he opened as a result of his decision in January last year, which was followed six months by an explosive press conference that was held by Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi on July 6 around the disbandment of the PKTT.
At his press conference, Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi accused the minister of interference in the work of the police and an attempt to protect members of an underworld criminal cartel that he claimed had captured various senior managers of the South African Police Services and the minister himself.
Following the revelations, President Cyril Ramaphosa then appointed a commission of inquiry to investigate Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi’s accusations while a parallel inquiry was also formed by Parliament in which Mchunu first appeared a month or so back.
Stay glued to your TV set for the spellbounding proceedings of the commission and the robust questioning of witnesses in search of the truth of the matter.
