Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legendary midfield maestro Theophilus ‘Doctor’ or ’16V’ Khumalo has urged fans of his former club to stay true to it regardless of form and pitch results.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the unveiling of beer brand Carling Black Label sponsorship marriage with the club at the SAB headquarters in Bryanston, Johannesburg, which included other legends such as former goalminder Itumeleng Khune and stalwert winger Mandla Masango and the club’s communications and marketing director Jesica Motaung and club manager Bobby Motaung.

Khumalo said it was important for the fans to always stay true to the club regardless of the players’ slump of form which normally results in the lack of delivery of expected results etc. “There is no house without its own problems and other clubs too have their own problems but it is imperative for the fans to work closes with club management to find a way of overcoming the challenges as opposed to becoming unruly and throwing missiles on the pitch against players, officials and the technical stuff which normally results in more woes for club,” the doctor of football said.

Khumalo pointed out that by adopting an unruly manner to solve internal club issues only deepens the nightmares as opposed to solving them. “Fans need to constantly seek an audience with management of the club to air their views and potential solutions to the quagmire. You don’t add salt to an already gaping wound,” he added.

Khumalo was giving his perspective on the shenanigans that followed more than a decade-long of trophyless cabinet at a club that had so spoilt with bagging each and every cup on offer in the domestic league, earning itself the title of the most successful club of all time in South African football.

His comments were echoed by die-hard club fan and Skeem Saam TV show actor Clement Maosa, who said; “As fans we need to find an amicable way of venting our frustrations when things are not going right or as expected. Your unequivocal support for the club during the most difficult and trying times tends to solidify your loyalty. You’re not just a fan because the club is raking in trophies to its cabinet,” said Maosa, better known as ‘Kwaito’ in the TV drama series.

Club manager Motaung said he was impressed with the club’s miraculous run in the Caf Confederations Cup which he said had resulted in the side topping its group ahead of a tough away final group clash against Zamalek of Egypt this coming weekend.

“I wish them all the best in the final group match and that the side comes back with a win to solidify its top spot, and that it also goes all the way to win the trophy it once won in 2001 when it was then called African Cup Winners’ Cup.

“I hold my bated breath with fingers crossed that our boys go all the way and win this cup once again. This will go a long way to boost their confidence and belief that they can also win the local league at some point. We want to prove that our fairytale run was not a fluke,” Motaung said.
